The William S. D. Woods Natural Heritage Area consists of over 400 acres of wooded land south of Charlottesville in Albemarle County. The property was donated to the land by Montgomery "Bird" Woods and Jose Lambert in 2014 and named after Woods' father. The land will become part of the county's parks system, but will not be programmed for many years. Two volunteer organizations will steward the property in the meantime. [1]

Quest for acceptance

Woods and Lambert were two retired architects who had built their careers in San Francisco and New York City. The land in the Arrowhead Valley and up Dudley Mountain had been bought in 1881 by Woods' grandfather. Woods himself had grown up in Richmond but had a house on nearby property. [2]

Albemarle County initially rejected the gift in late September out of a concern it would not have the resources to manage the property, as there was another gift closer to the Ragged Mountain Natural Area that the county was contemplating accepting. [3]
