Dr. William Dandridge "Dan" Haden (1879 - 1945) was a physician, businessmen and civic leader. As member of the city council (1930-1942), Haden served three terms as president of the council (mayor).

Business interests

Among Dr. Haden's business interests were the presidency of the National Bank & Trust Co., vice president of the Monticello Hotel and a director in the Jefferson-Lafayette Theaters. He was connected with a number of other business enterprises.

Haden was president of the Martha Jefferson Hospital, treasurer of the Virginia Cancer Foundation, treasurer of the Charlottesville Salvation Army, and a member of the Framington Country Club. Dr. Haden was a member of the University of Virginia board of visitors, receiving his appointment from Governor Darden in 1945.

Early life, family, death

Born on October 16, 1879 in Fluvanna County to Elbridge George Haden and Martha Douglas (Early) Haden. Eldridge G. Haden was a popularly elected mayor of Charlottesville.

Educated in medicine at the University of Virginia and at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Haden practiced here for more than 20 years. He retired from practice in 1933 to become president of the National Bank & Trust Co.

Haden died on April 8, 1945 at the University of Virginia Hospital. He was survived by his wife Sallie Cameron (Pugh) Haden and the following children: Mrs. Sallie (Joseph L.) Yon and Mrs. Elizabeth H. (William Massie) Smith, both wives of officers in the service (WW2), and Dr. W. Dan Haden, Jr of Washington, and Llewellyn P. Haden of Charlottesville. Burial was in Monticello Memorial Park, Albemarle County.[1]
