The Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS) was created in 1982 for the appreciation and conservation of Native Plants and their Habitats. Locally, the Jefferson Chapter of VNPS has field trips, presentations, and various conservation related activities. Each spring at the Ivy Creek Natural Area on Natural History Day, they have a native plant sale. They have also participated in local projects to remove invasive species from public areas, and played a role in bringing attention to rare species and habitats in Albemarle County. In addition, the group encourages responsibly planting native wildflowers as an alternative to potentially invasive exotic species.
