United States Route 29 is a significant roadway through Charlottesville and Albemarle, running approximately east-west through the city.
North of Charlottesville, U.S. 29 is signed Seminole Trail. In October 2006, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors considered a request from the University of Virginia Athletics Department to rename the road from Seminole Trail to Cavalier <something>, after the Virginia mascot. The renaming of the road became a front page story in The Daily Progress and the subject of an editorial in the paper. The matter was quickly dropped by the Board of Supervisors and no action was taken.[1]
