- 1905 – President, Mrs. Roosevelt, and Dr. Rixey stay at Pine Knot until November 4. Presley Marion Rixey, thirteenth Surgeon General of the Navy, was born in
Culpeper, Virginia, in 1852. After the death of President McKinley in 1901, Rixey was asked to remain at his post as White House physician by President Theodore Roosevelt.
- 1938 – The night after Orson Welles’ infamous dramatization of War of the Worlds (a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth), seventy-five students and residents of Central Virginia observed Mars through the Leander McCormick Observatory's 26-inch telescope to allay their fears of an invasion from outer space.
