- 1869 – Samuel Miller, a 19th-century philanthropist, died (aged 70). His Last Will and Testament provided for the majority of his estate to be used for the establishment of a boarding school for orphaned children, a school to be located near his birthplace in Albemarle County. Found in 1878, the Miller Manual School was a pioneer in combining the value of hands on labor with a liberal arts education.
