  • 1916 – The first popular election of a U.S. senator from Virginia occurred in the general election held. Prior to 1916, U.S. senators were chosen by state legislatures. At the beginning of the twentieth century, a widespread reform movement gained popularity and many states amended their laws to allow voters to designate their preference for U.S. senators.
