November 12:

  • 1840John A. G. Davis, a professor at the University of Virginia school of law, was shot by a rioting student wearing a mask. While a newspaper account at the time reported the wound was not mortal, Davis died three days later.
  • 1919 – After an illness of several months, Senator Thomas S. Martin, the Democratic leader in the Senate, died at his home name "Montesano" (eventually to be know as the Faulkner House) near the University. He was 72 years old.
