- 1840 – John A.G. Davis, a professor at the University of Virginia school of law, was shot by a rioting student wearing a mask named Joseph Semmes. While a newspaper account at the time reported the wound was not mortal, Davis died three days later.
- 1919 – Thomas S. Martin died at his home name "Montesano" (eventually to be know as the Faulkner House) near the University.
