- 1782 – The Virginia General Assembly enacted a law that allowed slaveholders to manumit their slaves by his or her last will and testament; where before, manumission, (the legal release of enslaved people at a time when slavery is sanctioned by law), required a special act of the state legislature.
- 1906 – The Daily Progress newspaper carried the following front page headline: ROOSEVELT COMING President And His Party Will Pay A Week End Visit To Pine Knot, In Southern Albemarle.
- 1935 – George Barclay Rives, former member of the United States diplomatic corps, died at his home “Edgewood” near Cobham, at the age of 60.
