The House of Burgesses is recognized not only for having been the first elected representative government in colonial Virginia, but as the place where some of the most notable names of the American Revolution, such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Richard Henry Lee, began their political careers.
  • 1782 – The Virginia General Assembly enacted a law that allowed slaveholders to manumit their slaves by his or her Last Will and Testament; where before, manumission, (the legal release of enslaved people at a time when slavery is sanctioned by law), required a special act of the state legislature.
  • 1815Peter Fossett, a reverend and Underground Railroad conductor, was born at Monticello under enslavement.
