- 1865 – Confederate major general Thomas L. Rosser, known in the Southern press as the "Saviour of the Valley," surrendered at Staunton and was paroled shortly afterwards.
- 1873 – Rev. William H. McGuffey, author of the McGuffey Readers, died at Charlottesville, Va. Born in Washington county, Pa., September 23, 1800, he became Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia in 1845 and served in that capacity until his death.
