  • 1835Martin Dawson died in Albemarle County. A prominent scholar, magistrate, and financial advisor to Thomas Jefferson, upon his death, a large portion of the Bellair land was willed to the University of Virginia, which in turn sold it and utilized the funds to build the Public Hall annexed to the Rotunda, as well as six student dormitories now known as Dawson’s Row.
  • 1957 – American actress, model and singer Marilyn Monroe and celebrated playwright Arthur Miller visited Monticello. The guide who led them through the house described Monroe as "very shy and quiet" and Miller as "especially courteous."
