- 1912 – Memorial Day exercises were observed under the direction of the Albemarle Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy at 4 o’clock p. m., at the Confederate Cemetery at the University of Virginia. This date had been set forward on account of the abundance of flowers at this time of the year; those persons who could not attend and bring flowers were encouraged to leave their contributions at James Perley. The first national celebration of the holiday took place May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Confederate and Union soldiers were buried. Originally known as Decoration Day, at the turn of the century it was designated as Memorial Day.
