- 1751 – James Madison, Jr. was born in Port Conway, Virginia. Madison died on June 28, 1836, on his Montpelier Estate.
- 2005 – recognizes Freedom of Information (FOI) Day annually during Sunshine Week. It also commemorates the birthday of President James Madison, who is widely regarded as the Father of the Constitution and the foremost advocate for openness in government. Established in March 2005 with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
