- 1806 – James Madison Randolph, grandson of Thomas Jefferson, was born at the President's House, now known as the White House, during daughter Martha's second visit to her father in Washington, D.C.
- 1920 – National Prohibition began when the Volstead Act went into effect. Since 1907, alcohol had been banned in Charlottesville after a local vote to go "dry"
- 1996 – Charles Hunter Brown, building contractor, religious and community leader, died (aged 88)
