August 6:

  • 1892 – The First Battalion of Colored Infantry of Richmond, Va., under command of Major J. B. Johnson arrived in Charlottesville early this morning. The battalion, headed by their band, marched to the fairgrounds of the Piedmont Industrial and Land Improvement Company, where a dress parade, bayonet exercise, and a sham battle took place. In 1876 four black companies combined to form the 1st Battalion Colored Infantry. Most militiamen joined for social and recreational reasons.
