- 1774 – Explorer Meriwether Lewis, who joined William Clark to blaze a trail across the continent to the Pacific Ocean, was born at the Lewis family estate, Locust Hill in Albemarle County, Colony of Virginia, in the present-day community of Ivy. Lewis became a soldier, an explorer, and a personal secretary to Thomas Jefferson. Best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery, he was appointed Governor of Upper Louisiana by President Thomas Jefferson in 1806.
