April 21:

  • 1779 – The Albemarle County Declaration of Independence is signed by numerous prominent citizens of the county.
  • 1892 – The man convicted of the murdering Policeman George T. Seals, was hanged this morning in the city jail-yard at 9 o’clock in the presence of Company D (Monticello Guard) and about fifty other spectators. After the cap was drawn over his head he said: “God bless everybody.” The trap was sprung by Policeman William Dove, successor to the murdered man.
  • 1958 – Charlottesville’s first Dogwood Festival kicked off on this day.
  • 1992 – Two sets of accidents on fog-shrouded Afton Mountain resulted in a forty-four westbound vehicles pileup and 10 eastbound on Interstate 64. One explanation of the accidents is that drivers slowed down in varying degrees in response to the fog, which resulted in fast cars colliding with slower ones.
