- 1606 – King James I of England issued the 1606 First Virginia Charter which created the Virginia Company authorizing eight Englishmen to colonize "that part of America commonly called Virginia".
- 1884 – Charles Pollard Olivier, future astronomer, notable for his contributions to the study of meteors, double stars, variable stars and founder of the American Meteor Society, was born in Charlottesville to George W. Olivier and Katharine Pollard Olivier.
- 1916 – Frank Dabney Peregoy (sometimes spelled Peregory) was born in Esmont, Virginia; World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the United States Army during World War II as a Technical Sergeant.
