James T. S. Taylor (1840 - 1918), a Charlottesville native who was among 25 blacks elected to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1867.[1] His final resting place is in Maplewood Cemetery.
Taylor was born in 1840 and died in 1918. Taylor enlisted in the Civil War and returned to Charlottesville with one thousand dollars cash, paving the way for property ownership. He was elected to the 1867 Virginia Constitutional Convention and was the only African-American elected representative from the Charlottesville area during Reconstruction.[2] Taylor was named to the thirteen-member committee that organized the business of the convention. On April 17, 1868, he voted with the majority to approve Virginia's new constitution.[3]
