  • 1954 – The mercury hit 107 degrees in the official thermometer at the University of Virginia’s Leander McCormick Observatory, equaling the highest reading taken there in more than 50 years the observatory has been keeping temperature records. The last time the temperature hit 107 at the observatory was on July 20, 1930, and that record stood unequalled until today.[1]
  • 1996 – Hurricane Fran hits the areas and heavy winds and rainfall caused much damage, prompting a declaration of emergency. [2] [3]
