From: E Main Street
To: Cherry Avenue
Namesake: Roosevelt "Rosie" Brown, Jr.

Portions of what is now the Roosevelt Brown Boulevard (at least the City expanded portions of the road between West Main Street and Cherry Avenue) were previously known as the “9th/10th Street Connector.”[1]

Namesake

Historic Marker: ROOSEVELT "ROSEY" [sic] BROWN, JR.

Roosevelt "Rosie" Brown is known by baby boomers for being an NFL football player in the 1950's/early 1960's and known locally for being the first African American professional football player from his hometown of Charlottesville to be named to the NFL Hall of Fame. The Brown family lived in the neighborhood on 5th Street. Roosevelt Brown Boulevard is a street in the Fifeville and Tonsler Neighborhoods Historic District named in Roosevelt "Rosie" Brown, Jr.'s honor.[2]By resolution at their regular meeting on September 18, 2006, the 2006 City Council unanimously approved re-naming a road as the “Roosevelt Brown Boulevard”, in honor of Roosevelt Brown, an NFL Hall-of-Famer and Charlottesville hometown hero. The road was previously known as the 9th/10th Street Connector.[3]
