Thomas was appointed to the Planning Commission by former Supervisor [[David Bowerman]].  Thomas was unsuccessful in his bid to get the Republican Party's nomination in June 2005 when [[Gary Grant]] was picked to run for the open seat being vacated by Bowerman. Thomas has announced he is again running as a Republican in this election.

Thomas appeared today on WINA AM 1070's [[Rob Schilling Show]] to share his announcement. "I will work for the people of the Rio District, and all of Albemarle County," said Thomas. "I plan to knock on every door in the Rio district and find out what people's concerns are."
