The Joint Use Intelligence Analysis Facility in Rivanna Station (JUIAF, Rivanna Station) is a military base quartering the nation's three top military intelligence gathering agencies: the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Ground Intelligence Center and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGIA)[1].

Federal property at Rivanna Station is owned and managed as a sub-installation of Fort Belvoir. A ribbon ceremony opening the facility was held on August 10, 2010[1]. [2]

The base is located on Route 29 in Albemarle County's Community of Piney Mountain designated growth area.

Uses

NGIC

Main article: National Ground Intelligence Center

NGIC moved to Rivanna Station from downtown Charlottesville, leaving a building now leased to SNL Financial. For some time, it was the sole user of Rivanna Station.

JUIAF

As a result of the 2005 Federal Base Relocation and Closure program, defense facilities are being built at both Ft. Belvoir, in Fairfax, and at Rivanna Station. Ground was broken in 2008 on a $58.5 million Joint Use Intelligence Analysis Facility (JUIAF) located on about 47 acres of federal land purchased from Wendell Wood's United Land Corp. The DIA and NGIA joined NGIC as part of the expanded base.

The site will also accommodate an additional 200 NGIC personnel. Parking will be available in surface lots for 625 vehicles. At least some Central Virginia residents will benefit with a new job, the results of a December 2009 job fair[3].

The JUIAF opened on August 10, 2010. [1]

Impacts on growth

Over 800 jobs with the Defense Intelligence Agency were expected to be transferred to the JUIAF by September 2011.[4] As of February 2, 2011, however, Albemarle County officials reported the number of expected jobs increases to 1,000, and of those 350 jobs have been filled. The report further states that "by that time, The Rivanna Station operations should reach a combined employment base over 2,600 jobs."[5] The DIA is also holding job fairs looking for engineers, foreign language experts, and scientists. [6]

As of November 7, 2011, there are 520 civilian and military employees at the station. Around 75 have been hired from the local community. [7] Station chief John Roberts told the Board of Supervisors in November that the station anticipated 700 employees.

Residential

Greene County and Albemarle County will likely experience some residential growth due to the influx, but the Town of Orange is also hoping to attract residents[8].

Nearby defense facilities

Wendell Wood is building the nearby Boulders Office Complex for defense-related offices. That project is not on federal property.
