Richard Heath Dabney was the first Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Virginia.

Biography

Richard Heath Dabney was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1860. Raised in Virginia, Dabney attended UVA, graduating in 1881. Following his graduation, Dabney studied in Germany at Munich, Heidelberg, and Berlin and received his Ph.D. in 1885. After returning to the United States, Dabney taught History at Indiana University until 1889 when he moved back to Virginia and began teaching at the University. In 1905, he was appointed the first Dean of Graduate Studies. He retired from UVA in 1938.[1] Dabney died in his Rugby Road home on May 16, 1947.[2]
