Philena Carkin (18381926) taught at and was the second principal of the original Jefferson School in Charlottesville.

Carkin was born on June 12, 1838, in Massachusetts.

Carkin joined the teaching staff of the Jefferson School in 1866, shortly before the Union troops left Charlottesville. She lived in the Delevan barracks with Anna Gardner. Both women were paid by the Freedman’s Bureau.[1]

After Gardner left the Jefferson School, Carkin took over as principal. She continued to teach.[1]

She died on January 18, 1926, in Concord, Massachusetts. She was 87. [2]
