Minor Preston Educational Fund
The Minor-Preston Educational Fund is a charitable trust that awards scholarships to local high school seniors.[1]
Since 1983, the fund has awarded more than $3 million in funds to over 1,000 seniors in Charlottesville and Albemarle public high schools.[2]
Minor-Preston Scholars receive a $3,000 annual scholarship that is renewable for up to four years. Eligible students must have a demonstrated financial need and come from be a minority or immigrant student or be a prospective first-generation college student.[2]
Scholarship recipients are paired with an adviser who provides guidance and support to the student throughout their college career.[2]
The fund is named after Rives C. Minor and his daughter, Asalie Preston. Born into slavery in 1856, Minor became an educator and eventually taught in Albemarle County's public schools for 21 years. His daughter Asalie also became a teacher and taught in Albemarle from 1922 to 1933 and then from 1936 to 1969. The fund was endowed following her death in 1982.[1]
