Guthrie was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to US Army General John R. and Mrs. Rebecca J. Guthrie. He graduated in 1975 from the [[University of Virginia]] with a Bachelors of Science in Education and received a Masters in Education from the school in 1976. After spending the majority of his working career as a Realtor in Northern Virginia, he moved back to Charlottesville to become President & CEO of the Roy Wheeler company. <ref name="chamber-award" />
 
He is the host of "Real Estate Matters,” a weekly radio show on real estate broadcast Saturday mornings on [[WINA]].  <ref name="chamber-award" />

Guthrie was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to US Army General John R. and Mrs. Rebecca J. Guthrie. He graduated in 1975 from the University of Virginia with a Bachelors of Science in Education and received a Masters in Education from the school in 1976.
