Meriwether Lewis Elementary School

Meriwether Lewis Elementary School is an Albemarle County public elementary school providing pre-K through 5th grade. The school is part of the western feeder pattern. Students from Meriwether Lewis will move on to Henley Middle School and graduate from Western Albemarle High School. As of 2012, Meriwether Lewis enrolled 447 students and maintained 63 staff and faculty members.[1]

History

Meriwether Lewis Elementary opened in 1922 and moved to its current location near Ivy in 1988. The school was named for Albemarle-born pioneer, Meriwether Lewis.[1] Lewis is perhaps best known for his exploration of the Louisiana Territory with William Clark and Sacajawea in 1803.

Awards

The school won the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence in 2009, 2010, 2011,[1] and 2012.[2]
