Council leadership
* Nikuyah Walker, Mayor (2018 - present)
* Heather Hill, Vice-mayor (2018 - present)
At their first regular meeting, held on January 2, 2018, the City Council elected Councilmember Walker as the presiding officer (known as mayor) of the City Council, to act as the official head of the city. At the same meeting, the City Council elected Councilmember Hill as their President Pro Tempore (known as vice-mayor), to perform the duties of the mayor during the mayor’s absence or disability.
Under the Council-Manager form of government, the mayor and City Council typically serve part-time, with day-to-day administration in the hands of a professional City Manager elected by the City Council. The mayor is a first among equals on the city council, which acts as a legislative body, while executive functions are performed by the appointed City Manager. The mayor is chair of the City Council, but lacks any special legislative powers.

Under the current Council-Manager form of city government, Charlottesville voters elect a five member Council to serve At-large as the City's legislative and governing body. The members serve four year terms and appoints a professional manager to handle the day-to-day affairs of the city. The Council also elects one of its members as the presiding officer (known as the Mayor),  Municipal elections are held in November in odd-numbered years. The terms of Council members are staggered so that three are elected in one year and two are elected two years later. If a vacancy occurs, Council elects a new member to serve out the unexpired term.
