Another area of confusion is school shootings. Although some trackers include any shooting that occurs on a school campus, the Government Accountability Office narrowed the definition to focus on “instances where students or staff were at risk [and] defined a school shooting as ‘any time a gun is fired on school grounds, on a bus, during a school event, during school hours, or right before or after school.’ This definition, therefore, would exclude suicides in a parking lot or a gang incident in a school playground on the weekend.<ref name=":1" />

Latest revision as of 17:17, 10 February 2024

On February 27, 2023, Michael Kochis, Charlottesville’s new police chief, held a Community Forum on Recent Gun Violence at Old Trinity Church in response to recent area homicides.

This is a list of notable shootings in the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the University of Virginia that have occurred since 1840. All times are approximate. Excluded from this list are the following:

  1. Incidents that occurred during wars
  2. Incidents that occurred as a result of police actions
  3. Murder-suicides by rejected suitors or estranged spouses
  4. Suicides or suicide attempts involving only one person

Terminology

According to the Charlottesville Police Department, "Shots fired calls" are raw numbers that reflect the call for service, but does not separate injuries, death or confirmed by any kind of evidence. Numbers were provided by Charlottesville Police Chief Tito Durrette who spoke to Charlottesville City Council on Monday, November 7, 2022 about crime statistics in the city.[1][2]

There is no commonly agreed-upon term to define a mass shooting, only “mass killing,” which Congress defines as three or more people killed in a single incident, not including the perpetrator.[3]

Another area of confusion is school shootings. Although some trackers include any shooting that occurs on a school campus, the Government Accountability Office narrowed the definition to focus on “instances where students or staff were at risk [and] defined a school shooting as ‘any time a gun is fired on school grounds, on a bus, during a school event, during school hours, or right before or after school.’ This definition, therefore, would exclude suicides in a parking lot or a gang incident in a school playground on the weekend.[3]
