Lewis and Clark led the expedition, ordered by Thomas Jefferson, called the Corps of Discovery. Merriwether Lewis was born in Albemarle County, in what is now Ivy. William Clark was born in Caroline County.

In 1973, the Jefferson Cable Corporation filmed a brief documentary narrated by Bernard Chamberlain describing the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
