Lewis Commodore was a slave purchased by the University of Virginia in 1832 at the cost of $580. His duties were to ring a bell at Rotunda and to open the library. He is believed to have lived near the chemistry laboratory. Commodore rang the bell until the mid-1840's when he was relived of his duties after being accused of drunkenness. He was sold in 1851.
