John W. (Billy) Williams, ca. 1960

John W. (Billy) Williams was a member and chairman (1957-1963) of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. He was appointed to a fourth consecutive term as chair in 1960. [1]

Notable events

  • In January 1952, he and two other supervisors disagreed with county executive Dan A. Robinson regarding how livestock should be assessed for tax purposes. [2]
  • September 17, 1952Albemarle County Board of Supervisors go into closed session without giving the press a reason why. Williams told the Daily Progress that "I have no comment to make at this time." [3]
  • In 1953, he opted not to run for the House of Delegates. [4]
  • In 1954, he was chair of an Albemarle County committee that offered a recommendation on school segregation what was presented to the Board of Supervisors on September 22 of that year. [5]
  • December 31, 1963 – Williams, whose name has been in speculation as a possible candidate for City Council in the 1964 election, said today that he doesn’t plan to seek election. Williams term on the Albemarle Board of Supervisors ends at midnight. His home is in the area annexed by the city in 1962, so he would be eligible to seek city office after expiration of his term as a county official. Many of those who elected him to the county office are – along with him – now city residents through annexation.[6]
