About

Hugh Carr was born between 1840 and 1843. Following the Civil War, Carr hired himself out to work on several farms in the area and in 1870 purchased a 58-acre tract of land that would eventually become River View Farm. Carr continued to expand the farm and by 1890 it was over 125 acres in size.

Carr and his second wife, Texie Mae Hawkins, raised seven children. Although himself without proper education, he emphasized education in the rearing of his children. One of his daughters, Mary Louise Carr-Greer, would go on to become the principal of the Albemarle Training School and the namesake of Greer Elementary School.[1]

He is buried at the cemetery located at the natural area. [2]
