The Hardware River is a tributary of the James River and part of the Chesapeake Bay's watershed. It is formed by the confluence of two smaller forks in southern Albemarle County and flows into the James about seven miles southeast of Scottsville.

The river is considered impaired by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality because of high concentrations of bacteria. A 2015 water quality implementation report concluded it would cost about $10 million to address the issue, including fixing failing septic systems, preventing livestock from getting in tributaries and planting vegetated buffers.
