Preliminary engineering scheduled for 2018

A plan to build a grade-separated interchange at Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29 has been debated for many decades. The project is part of VDOT's Route 29 Solutions package. [1] This grade-separated interchange was recommended by Phase 2 of the 29H250 Study. The project has evolved to utilize a single point urban interchange (SPUI).

Virginia Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne authorized acceleration of funding for preliminary engineering to begin in fiscal year 2017, a year ahead of schedule. [2]

Timeline

  • 1/17/1995: City Council passes resolution opposing grade-separated interchange [3].
  • 10/20/2009: Albemarle County Planning Commission presented with official map showing all parcels of land needed to complete project
  • 6/18/2014: CTB allocates $10 million for preliminary engineering [4]
  • February 2017: Planning gets underway for intersection improvements concurrently with a new land-use plan[5]
  • March 9, 2017: Hydraulic panel meets for the first time [6]
