George Gilmer

In 1777, Dr. George Gilmer purchased the land on which Pen Park now exists[1].

Gilmer died in 1796, followed by his wife in 1800[citation needed].

Descendants

Gilmer's son Francis W. Gilmer was the first professor of Latin at the University of Virginia[citation needed].

His grandson Thomas Walker Gilmer was a governor of Virginia and secretary of the navy who died in an explosion on the U.S.S. Princeton in 1844[2].
