George French Compton (1818-1916) was the City of Charlottesville’s Clerk of the Corporation Court and deputy clerk of the Albemarle County Circuit Court in the early 1900’s.

Mr. Compton was appointed deputy under Clerk Richard W. Duke. At the latter’s death on February 13, 1909, he was appointed by Judge G. Burnley Sinclair to fill the unexpired position of Mr. Duke’s term, which commenced on February 1, 1907. Mr. Compton was chose clerk in the election in the fall of 1914 and began his term of eight years on February 1, 1915. Through failing heath, he was obliged to give up the practice working of the office. Mr. C. E. Moran, his deputy, took up the duties for him.

Compton was born on March 8, 1818 in Martinsburg, W. Va. He was married on June 12, 1872 in Fairmont, W. Va. to Juliet Welty (1815-1915). He died on July 12, 1916 in Charlottesville; interment was in the family section of Maplewood Cemetery.
