Gallery Court Hotel
The Gallery Court Hotel is a planned 72-room, seven-story boutique hotel at 140 Emmet Street developed by local hotelier Vipul Patel. The site was previously the Excel Inn, which burned down in May 2017, [1] formerly known as the Gallery Court Motor Hotel at the time of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s visit to Charlottesville in 1963.[2]
The Planning Commission voted 5-2 to approve the permit on September 11, 2018, after deciding that it created an adverse impact on the Route 29 Entrance Corridor and imposing nearly a dozen conditions.[3] City Council voted 4-1 to grant the proposed hotel a Special Use Permit on October 1, 2018, allowing an extra 20' of height for a total of 80', despite opposition from residents of the Lewis Mountain neighborhood organized by former mayor Bitsy Waters.[4]
The hotel is expected to have a cafe (without a kitchen) at street level, a rooftop snack bar for hotel patrons, and a restaurant & conference space on the third floor. A structured parking garage will provide one parking space per room.
Demolition of the burned out hotel took place in the spring of 2023. [5]
