Forest Hills Park, formerly known as Forest Park, is a 7.35 acre[1] park located on Forest Hills Avenue in Charlottesville.[2] The park reopened in May 2010 after a major renovation which saw the creation of a sprayground, a new playground, and a new picnic pavilion. [3] [4]

The city's comprehensive plan classifies Forest Hills Park as a 'neighborhood' park[5].

Amenities

Amenities include

  • an open recreation field,
  • paved neighborhood trail,
  • a number of picnic facilities, including a picnic shelter and outdoor grills,
  • playground equipment,
  • two full basketball courts
  • sprayground

History

The city acquired the property from J. Hubert and Dorothy Carver in 1955.[2]

2009/2010 Improvements

The 2005 Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment determined that the Forest Hills wading pool was in need of major repair or replacement. In 2008, with the assistance of the Timmons Group a master plan was developed that included a sprayground to replace the wading pool, the addition of walking trails through the park, and a new picnic pavilion. As of July 2009, the park is closed until these renovations are complete[6]. Parks and Recreation director Brian Daly has said construction should end by spring 2010[7]. The Virginia Recreation and Park Society issued a "Best New Renovation" award for the park. [8] [4]

2009 additions

Also in 2009 Southern Development donated 1.5 acres of land to be added to the park, in conjunction with one of their new developments[9].

2010 shooting

A 14-year-old boy shot a 13-year-old girl in September 2010, though he was aiming for another boy[10].
