Elected & Appointed Officials
Both cities and towns operate under charters (little constitutions) granted by the Virginia General Assembly. Unless state law says otherwise, charter provisions take precedent over state law. To amend or replace its charter, a city or town has to obtain General Assembly approval.
City of Charlottesville
City Council
The City Council holds the legislative power of the City in accordance with the (First Class) Charter Law of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Every legislative should be done by Ordinance or Resolution. The City Council is comprised of five (5) members including the City Council President (Mayor) and City Council Vice-President (Vice-Mayor). City Council members are directly elected by all of the city's voters (at-large) and serve four-year terms.
