Edgar Evans Dinwiddie, M. A. (1852-1942) was late nineteenth and early twentieth century educator, businessman and prominent community member.[1]

Dinwiddie attended the University of Virginia during the 1870-1871 session[2] and later taught Greek, French and English at the Germantown Academy, Germantown, Pennsylvania; then co-principal Greenwood University Preparatory School, Greenwood, Virginia, The school was later called Greenwood School. The school buildings were used as a hospital in the Civil War. Edgar then became a member of faculty of Pantops Academy, Charlottesville, Virginia; then established Dinwiddie’s University School, Clarksville, Virginia; later principal of Charlottesville High School, Charlottesville, Virginia; then secretary and treasurer of the Citizens Real Estate & Insurance Agency and, in 1886 with the Charlottesville Perpetual Building and Loan Company at the origination of that company. Edgar was born on December 23, 1853 in Campbell County, Virginia to William Walthall and Nancy (Bryan) Dinwiddie. He was the youngest of their nine sons who included: John Dinwiddie (1834–1898); James Dinwiddie (1837–1907); Harman Dinwiddie (1841–1861); Marshall Dinwiddie (1845–1916); William Walthall Dinwiddie (1847–1909).

Edgar Evans Dinwiddie married Anna Bledsoe, daughter of Dr. Albert T. Bledsoe, on February 8, 1881 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was born October 25, 1851 in Mississippi and was a teacher at Germantown Academy before she married Edgar. The couple had two daughters. Anna died March 4, 1923 (age 71)[4] in Charlottesville and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery). Edgar died on January 14, 1942 (age 89) in Charlottesville and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery.
