The Jefferson Area Eastern Planning Initiative was a two-year study overseen by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission launched in January 2000. A final report was released in September 2001. Members of the committee met eleven times for a series of workshops that sought to come up with answers to three basic questions:

  1. "How will we live? - In what types of communities do we want to live and work by the year 2050?"
  2. "Where will we live? - What areas in the region are suitable for urban development and what areas are off limits?"
  3. "How will we get there? - What steps are needed to move the region from where it is now to the desired types of communities and growth patterns?"
