==Election history==
Brown ran for City Council twice, successfully, as a Democrat.  He announced in the spring of 2011 that he would not seek a third term. <ref name="dpeight">{{cite-progress|title=Eight Years Is Plenty: Brown Wont Seek Re-election to Council|publishdate=21 Apr. 2010|url=http://www2.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/eight_years_is_plenty_brown_wont_seek_re-election_to_council/55158/}}</ref>

After [[Frank Buck]] held the position of mayor for four consecutive terms (1980-1988), councilors serviced only a single two-year term as mayor. That was broken when Brown became mayor for a second term. <ref>{{cite-hook|title=Mayorsville: Here, everybody's a mayor|url=http://www.readthehook.com/79706/cover-mayorsville-here-everybodys-mayor|author=Lisa Provence|pageno=|printno=0532|printdate=August 10, 2006|publishdate=August 10, 2006|accessdate=July 3, 2020}}</ref>

===[[2007 election]]===
Brown announced his candidacy for a second term on April 25, 2007. <ref>{{cite web|title=Brown Announces Bid for City Council|url=http://www.cvilletomorrow.org/news/article/7551-brown/|author=Sean Tubbs|work=News Article|publisher=Charlottesville Tomorrow|location=|publishdate=April 25, 2007|accessdate=April 17, 2018}}</ref>

Later that spring, he became one of three Democrats nominated at a caucus. <ref>{{cite web|title=Brown, Edwards & Huja Nominated for Council|url=http://www.cvilletomorrow.org/news/article/7559-seaman/|author=Brian Wheeler|work=|publisher=Charlottesville Tomorrow|location=|publishdate=June 2, 2007|accessdate=March 11, 2013}}</ref>
