The school's name was reviewed as part of a comprehensive look at all Albemarle educational facilities. [3]

A committee's final recommendation released on March 26, 2021 is to keep the existing name. [4] On April 1, 2021, the School Board opted to keep the existing name. [5]

History

Murray Elementary opened as a school for Black elemetary students in 1960 [6] and was desegregated in 1965. There were 234 students enrolled in the first year. [7]

The school was named for Virginia L. Murray (1897-1959), a Virginia native and the first African-American supervisor in Albemarle County. Murray was a passionate advocate for education and consistently sought to improve the quality of the public education system. The school was closed for construction in 1988 and students were moved to Meriwether Lewis Elementary School for two years before returning to a renovated Murray in 1990.[citation needed]
