The Charlottesville Planning Commission holds its regular meeting on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning at 5:30 in City Council Chambers. Prior to regular meeting, the Commission holds an informal "pre-meeting" in the Neighborhood Development Services Conference room. At this meeting, Commissioners review items that will be discussed at the regular meeting and run through the agenda to ask further questions about what they will discuss.

Members are appointed to four-year terms by City Council. One vacancy will be opened up later in the year when Hosea Mitchell's term lapses. He has announced he will not seek a reappointment.

According to the City's website, the Commission: "Advises Council on promoting orderly development of community. Advises in the development of comprehensive plan, including land use, transportation, community facilities and service, and designation of renewal and other treatment areas. It advises on zoning, subdivision, capital programming and other planning activities."[1]
