Charlottesville's Office of the Sheriff handles civil process of legal papers, inmate transportation, mental patient transportation for the Charlottesville Police Department through a cooperative agreement, and provides security for Charlottesville's Circuit and General District Courts.

The sheriff's office does not perform criminal law enforcement, which is instead handled by the Charlottesville Police Department[1].

The current sheriff is James E. Brown, who was elected on November 3, 2009 and sworn in on December 23, 2009.
