The Charlottesville Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CASPCA, or the SPCA) is the area's primary animal shelter, the local arm of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The SPCA is a no-kill shelter. [2]
The SPCA is supported by private donations as well as funding from Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The SPCA shelter has been the official "pound" for the city since 1956. [3]
Mission Statement
"The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is a nonprofit animal welfare organization that provides a safe environment for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of Charlottesville and Albemarle County and places them in good homes. We strive to set a standard of excellence and leadership in animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs."

Rummage sale
For years, the SPCA held a semi-annual rummage sale in order to raise funds. In 2007, they opened a permanent store. [4]
